I recently came across the word "maturescence" which apparently means "approaching maturity." To me, it sounds like a merging of 'mature' and 'essence' which may be why it seems so fitting for this Capricorn Full Moon. The Full Moon is the maturation of the lunation cycle, and Capricorn is symbolized by the seagoat, a half-goat half-fish creature adept at climbing craggy mountains and swimming through the sea - a hybrid of the practical and the mystical.
This Capricorn Full Moon forms a conjunction to intense Pluto and sextile imaginative Neptune. And symbolic of these aspects, today NASA released astounding images of space from their Webb telescope. Brilliantly powerful images of the eternally vast cosmos, some millions of lightyears away, of stars forming, galaxies dancing, and black holes devouring.
Meditate on these images and it's impossible not to be in complete awe of the universe and our fortune to exist in it with consciousness, even for the blink of an eye that is the human lifespan. When even the great stoic thinker Marcus Aurelius urges us to gaze upon the stars and run with them, who are we to deny their exquisite power to inspire and activate the soul?
This year began with a Capricorn New Moon on January 2, 2022, and now 6 months later, we can see how far we've come in our efforts toward Capricornian themes such as work, responsibility, and authority. Saturn, ruler of Capricorn is now retrograde in Aquarius and this can be a time of restructuring in ways that call for concepts and ideas that are truly effective and innovative.
The Full Moon is also illuminating the dark side of Pluto abuses of power in the collective. Pluto is back to the degree of the Pluto return of the United States, unearthing the shadows of this 'maturing' nation and secretive plutocratic dealings which may still yet come to light. Even beyond the U.S., this lunation cycle has seen quite a few powerful figures fall in a short span of time - the Prime Minister of the UK, the assassination of the former PM of Japan, the ousting of the leadership of Sri Lanka, the ruthlessness of Uber's CEO, to name just a few.
Pluto is wrapping up its time in Capricorn and will first dip into Aquarius in 2023. Perhaps the Plutocracies of money, power and wealth for the privileged few will see some significant transitions into the Aquarian archetype of community, collectivity and the good of all?
As the NASA images remind us, we're part of a vast and magical cosmos and while we build our Earthly existence we must never forget the majesty from which we've come. The Earth element is the container for soul, spirit and miracles that awaken through our consciousness.
Capricorn teaches us that maturity and wisdom don't happen to us as a result of time and age but through the work of conscious personal development, reflection and commitment to change.
